What Are Word Problems?
A word problem is a mathematics question written in a sentence form. It is a mathematical problem expressed entirely in words typically used as an educational tool. It is a few sentences describing a real life scenario where a problem needs to be solved by way of a mathematical calculation. The following are the steps involved in solving word problems:
- Read the question very well.
- Identify what you are expected to do
- Translate the problem to a solvable one.
- Solve it
- Cross check your answer
Examples
(1)A teacher has 10 biros. He gives n of themto one of thestudentsand keeps the rest. If he keeps 3 biros, what is the value onn?Solution
Total numbers of biros = 10
Numbers of biros given out = n
Number of biros kept = 3
Therefore, n = 10 ─3 = 7
